Promoting   Hi-Tech   Joint   Ventures

A Natural Gas Distribution system in Sharjah, a Waste Disposal System in Dubai, modern  high-rise building technology, and an institute to study and certify Environment Conservation  efforts are the first in the series of initiative launched by the S.S. Lootah International.  Other projects, some in the energy sector are also in the pipeline.

“The International Division was created primarily to focus on enhancing the Lootah Group’s profile on the global scene.  This activity has resulted in tie-up with high technology solution providers for executing projects in the UAE and the Gulf,” H. Dan Danesh who heads the division stated.

The Lootah Group holds the majority 51 per cent share in these ventures and brings to the business its considerable experience in civil construction activities in the UAE. In line with its keen involvement in the development of the country, the group has been seeking suitable international partners with the applicable expertise.

The development of a natural gas distribution network, a first for the UAE and the Gulf, required not only the expertise in gas transportation, but also a reliable and safe distribution system reaching into households.  For this project, the Lootah Group found a partner, BC Gas International of Canada with over 100 year experience, construction and operation.

Headquartered in Vanouver, Canada, BC-Gas operate a pipeline network of 35,000 km reaching out to 750,000 customers in the region.  The SS Lootah – BC Gas International joint venture was established in November 1997.  The company, based in sharjah won the Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contract for Phase 1 of the Sharjah Natural Gas Distribution from the Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority in 1998 and has been working on network, which is due for completion by summer of this year.

This is the Phase 1 of the project that involves construction of a short section of high pressure natural gas transmission line, three gas pressure reduction states and about 170 km of gas distribution mains reaching out to 3000 buildings in the densely populated parts of the city of Sharjah.  This work is nearing completion, with the first 12000 of a total of 25,000 domestic gas connections already provided.

The second phase of the system, expected to reach another 35,000 customers and involve laying 500 km of pipeline, and is due to commence shortly.  The S.S. Lootah –BC Gas joint venture has been involved in tendering for this work. “ We now have an established expertise base in the UAE and are

talking to the authorities in Abu Dhabi and Dubai on commissioning a similar system in those cities.  “ Danesh added.

The UOG’s Dolphin Project envisaging investments of over $ 8-10 billion is set to have a major impact on the region’s energy profile, the distribution of natural gas to all parts of the UAE. The Lootah – BC Gas joint venture is well poised to take on works connected with this project.
